How the calculation works

ticks = (exit − entry) ÷ tick size
profit = ticks × tick value × contracts − commission × 2 × contracts

For a short trade the sign of the ticks flips: a falling price is a gain. Entering points or ticks instead of prices skips the first line. Example: 1 ES contract bought at 6000.00 and sold at 6012.75 is 51 ticks, so 51 × $12.50 = $637.50 before commission.

Every trade, without the typing. PFT-EdgeBook imports your trades from ATAS, NinjaTrader and Sierra Chart and works out the P&L, fees and R-multiple of each one for you. The journal is free.

Questions about futures ticks and points

What is a tick in futures?

A tick is the smallest price step the exchange allows for a contract. On the E-mini S&P 500 (ES) one tick is 0.25 index points and is worth $12.50 per contract. Every contract has its own tick size and tick value, listed in the table on this page.

How much is one point on ES, NQ, MES and MNQ?

One full index point is worth $50 on ES, $20 on NQ, $5 on MES and $2 on MNQ. A point has four ticks on all four contracts, because they all move in steps of 0.25.

What is the difference between micro and mini futures?

A micro contract tracks the same index or commodity as its larger counterpart at one tenth of the size. MES moves in the same 0.25 steps as ES, but one tick is worth $1.25 instead of $12.50. The price is the same, only the dollar value per tick changes.

How is futures profit calculated?

Take the exit price minus the entry price, divide by the tick size to get ticks, and multiply by the tick value and the number of contracts. For a short trade the sign flips. Subtract the commission for both sides of the trade to get the net result.

Does the calculator include fees?

It subtracts the commission you enter, per contract and per side. Exchange, clearing and platform fees are only included if they are part of that number, so check your broker's statement for the full cost per round turn.

For educational purposes, not financial advice. The calculator does arithmetic on the numbers you enter; it does not know your broker’s fees, margin or fills. Futures trading involves substantial risk of loss.
